About the Guy H. Hiler Trophy

The Guy H. Hiler Trophy, also known as ‘The Hiler’ is awarded each year to the player that best represents the team-spiritedness and true Caribbean character of the Annual Caribbean Beach Volleyball Championships. This player, male or female, will have demonstrated true sportsmanship, care and concern for the well-being of others, and the genuine friendliness and hospitality for which the People of the Caribbean are well known.

The player who wins The Hiler may not necessarily be the most skilled player and does not have to be a member of the team that wins the tournament. It is desirable, though not mandatory, that the player be of Caribbean heritage.

The player who wins The Hiler is expected to share the reason for winning with others, and to encourage others to aspire to the ideals of The Hiler trophy:

To demonstrate true sportsmanship, care and concern for the well-being of others, and the genuine friendliness and hospitality for which the People of the Caribbean are well known.

About Guy H. Hiler

Guy H. Hiler was born in the Caribbean around the middle of the last century and immigrated to the United States while still a young man. He became involved in working for the promotion and upliftment of the People of the Caribbean and through his work was able to use sports as a vehicle for achieving that goal. Though physical constraints prevented him from ever excelling in sports he encouraged his own daughter and others to participate in volleyball at a competitive level and to use the game to build strength and character.

The annual “Hiler” is presented in his name, to the Caribbean Beach Volleyball Championship player who best exemplifies the true sportsmanship, care and concern for the well-being of others, and the genuine friendliness and hospitality for which the People of the Caribbean are well known.
